BEST SPORTING MOMENTS OF 2023

1. Alex Carey scores his maiden test ton on Boxing Day and became only the 2nd keeper to score a ton at the MCG. It was accomplished with humility & grace…something that only David Warner could only dream about.

2. Steve Smith notching up his 30th test ton at the SCG and joined a very short list of only 4 Australians who have moved past the benchmark set by Don Bradman of 29 test ton’s. He had a hiccup in South Africa, he owned it & has repaid it in every sense.

3. Game 1 of the 2023 Ashes Series at Edgbaston. In a test match that rivalled the world’s best roller coaster, this win will go down in Ashes history as one of our best. Late nights can be worth it.

4. The Matildas – It didn’t go according to plan in the end, but it didn’t matter. This inspirational Matildas team had smashed TV ratings & made a nation standstill on more than one occasion, and they did it all with incredible class & dignity.

5. After 56 minutes and down 8–24, Brisbane had it in the bag, and everyone at the game and watching it on TV thought the same. But not Nathan Cleary. In 15 minutes, he produced the most significant comeback victory in a premiership decider in an astonishing display you will never see again.

6. Glenn Maxwell at the 2023 ODI World Cup. With the top order decimated and a scoreboard showing 7-91, win-loss predictor calculators gave the Aussies a less than 1% chance of winning. No chance? No problem. Enter Maxwell, who belted 201 not out from 128 balls when he could hardly walk, let alone run, and with it, a semi-final berth. Australia went on to seal the 2023 ODI World Cup.

7. South Africa somehow manage to get home against the All Blacks in a final that had everything including 3 sin bins and New Zealand captain Sam Cane becoming the first player to be sent off in a RWC final. Epic.

8. Eddie Jones departing The Wallabies for Japan.

WORST SPORTING MOMENTS OF 2023

1. David Warner scores what could have been a career-defining double ton in the Boxing Day Test, but no. Instead, Mr. & Mrs. Warner go into PR overdrive, and the following interviews showed not one ounce of humility but plenty of denial and self-pity. But mostly, it proved that, yet again, they can’t read a room.

2. Ashes Jonny Bairstow’s stumping. Is it in the laws of the game? Yes. But so, at the time, was the underarm ball, and the less said about that, the better.

3. Parramatta Eels. Grand finalists in 2022 and fucking nowhere in 2023. The year commenced with Matterson not paying a pittance fine and losing 5 out of our their six matches. Add to that the ill-discipline both on and off the field, and what you is a cluster fuck of a year.

4. The Wallabies – Missing the World Cup sudden death stage is an appalling result for a national team that was once the envy of world rugby. Now it is a dysfunctional mess with those in charge seemingly rudderless and not a clue how to steer it out of the minefield it is in.

5. The F1 in Las Vegas – Yawn fest supreme.

6. Eddie Jones – Stupidly hired less than 12 months before a Rugby World Cup it didn’t matter what he was selling because no one was buying it. Case in point: the employment of Jason Ryles, a rugby league prop, as attack coach for the Wallabies just 3 weeks before the World Cup.

QUOTES OF 2023

“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another without any lack of enthusiasm” – Wayne Bennett, SuperCoach.

“Rule 1 is don’t be late. Hate people being late because all you telling me is that you more important than the rest of us” – Wayne Bennett, SuperCoach.

“You have to confront the brutal reality, and at the same time, have completely unwavering faith” – John Babiste.
